Extra Virgin Olive Oil as a Hair Mask

You’re staring into the mirror, brushing your hair after a shower. A few more strands than usual cling to the bristles, and you wonder—not for the first time—if your hair could ever feel thicker, stronger, like it did years ago. You’ve heard the old stories about olive oil, the grandmother’s remedy. But does it really help hair grow, or is it just a shiny myth? What if the answer isn’t about forcing growth, but about removing what holds it back?

I used to think that “growing” hair was all about stimulation—special potions, aggressive scalp massages, or vitamins that promised to wake follicles up. I saw olive oil as just a heavy moisturizer, something that might weigh hair down or make it greasy. Like many, I assumed growth was something you had to actively cause.

That changed one winter, when my scalp was dry and my ends were splitting no matter what I tried. Out of sheer simplicity, I reached for the only pure thing in my kitchen: a bottle of fresh extra virgin olive oil. After a few weeks of gentle, consistent use, the difference wasn’t in dramatic new growth—it was in what wasn’t happening. The breakage stopped. My scalp felt calm. My hair finally held onto its length. I realized: growth isn’t just about the root; it’s about protecting every centimeter of the strand on its journey outward.

Hair grows best when breakage is low and the scalp is healthy—and olive oil supports both.

Less breakage, more length
Olive oil deeply moisturizes dry strands, helping them stay flexible and reducing split ends that make hair look stuck at the same length.

A calmer scalp
Its natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds help soothe dryness and irritation, creating a healthier environment for hair follicles.

Stronger strands
Extra virgin olive oil contains vitamin E and polyphenols that help protect hair from heat styling, brushing, and everyday stress.

Natural shine and softness
Well-nourished hair reflects light better, making it look fuller and healthier—without silicones or harsh coatings.

How to use it simply:

  •       Warm a small amount (never hot)
  •       Apply from mid-lengths to ends
  •       Leave on for 20–30 minutes, then shampoo
  •       Use 1–2 times per week
  •   For dry scalp, gently massage a small amount before washing

Hair that stays moisturized and protected breaks less—and when breakage slows down, visible length finally starts to show.

This is why I’m careful about which oil I use. I use Donika on my hair—the same single-origin, organic oil I cook with. I know it’s pure, fresh, and free of anything that could irritate my scalp, so I can trust what I’m applying.

Next time you wash your hair, try replacing your usual mask with a small amount of fresh extra virgin olive oil and just observe how your hair feels after.

Back at the mirror, the brush still in hand, the worry feels quieter. You’re not looking for a miracle, just a little more strength, a little less loss. The final takeaway? Sometimes the best growth comes not from adding something new, but from gently protecting what’s already there.
